Asia, Malaysia, Luxury Holidays to The Datai Langkawi

Asia & Malaysia

There’s something about Southeast Asia that draws you back again and again. Enchanting landscapes, tantalising cuisines and stunning nature mark Southeast Asia as a favourite for luxury holidays. On a quest to recharge and embrace some calm away from the grey saturated skies of the UK, I succumbed to the endless recommendations and booked a trip to the island of Langkawi. Located just off the northwest shore of Malaysia, Langkawi is an archipelago made up of 99 islands. A beauty characterises Langkawi that combines an earnest nod to its rich cultural heritage, unparalleled scenery, and an undeniable air of tranquillity and style. With a mixed population comprised of Malay, Indian and Thai ethnicities, Malaysia’s multiculturalism underpins the warm, welcoming and tolerant attitude that remains at the heart of Malaysian culture.

The Datai Langkawi

I’ve always found that choosing your destination is only half the work when it comes to booking the perfect trip. When visiting a country like Malaysia, a destination that’s so enriched with culture and natural beauty, I want a hotel that reflects that authentic character whilst retaining the style and comforts of a boutique luxury hotel. I need much more than a comfortable room and a nice pool from a hotel, I want an experience I will remember; which is why I’ve opted for the award-winning boutique hotel Datai Langkawi Malaysia. A holiday should encompass special moments, and with their recent refurbishment, I feel confident that Datai Langkawi will deliver on this promise with its delightful array of perks and facilities. I was immediately captivated by the way in which Datai Langkawi appears to bear a multitude of layers; from tropical nature reserve with wildlife trails, to a sleek, sophisticated and tranquil spa – the resort seems to wear many hats, catering for different needs and pleasures.

Beautiful scenery shouldn’t be limited to the outdoors. I find that the interior design of a hotel plays a really important role in making you feel comfortable. You know as soon as a hotel describes its rooms in terms of ‘Collections’ you’re in for something special. I was immediately drawn to the nature themed and inspired rooms at the Datai Langkawi as they emerge as a fun and creative way to honour the natural surroundings of the resort. You really can’t beat a view from up high, which is why I’m particularly excited by the villas available in The Rainforest collection. Situated on stilts, the exterior of the villas resemble treehouses nestled amongst the surrounding trees and foliage. The interior design runs parallel with this theme with its earthy, but bright and airy, tones. Your room is your respite from the outside world so the attention to detail is paramount. From the stand-alone bath, Egyptian cotton sheets, the walk in wardrobe and the private pool – I love the investment in the details, big and small. I’m picturing sitting outside on the balcony with a glass of wine on a sleepy and relaxed afternoon, gazing out onto the mesmerizing view of the treetops, with the emerald green sea glistening in the distance. Pure bliss.

Relaxing and unwinding forms the foundation of most of my trips, and in order to reach that desired Zen-like state I need a spa with high end facilities. From scouring their website and online reviews, it seems that wellbeing isn’t just regarded as a service or an-add on at Datai Langkawi, it’s presented as a philosophy. Employing traditional local knowledge of treatments and therapies, the boutique resort adopts Ramuan – an ancient concoction of natural herbs and plants. I don’t want to feel like I’m at my local spa back at home, so details like these are integral to obtaining those authentic and special experiences. To appease my restless side, I’m also excited to try out the yoga and pilates classes available at The Holistic Pavilion, as well as the seminars on natural healing methods and breathing.

I love food and I couldn’t possibly book a hotel that doesn’t accommodate this passion! I’ve always considered a dynamic and atmospheric dining setting to be really important, which bodes well as each of Data Langkawi’s restaurants are embedded in beautiful settings, each characterised with a different feel, culture and cuisine. Enveloped in the luscious rainforest, The Gulai House looks like the perfect setting for a relaxed evening meal with its warm orange lighting and floor cushion seating. Amidst the foliage, The Pavilion sits on top of 30-metre stilts and offers award winning Thai food with ample treetop views. Sometimes you just want a quick and casual bite, which is where The Beach club comes in, offering a laid back, casual menu with pizzas and fresh seafood. There’s nothing worse than being presented with the same, monotonous menu and restaurant setting day and after day, so I’m glad that the Datai Langkawi seems to excel in terms of the versatility of cuisines and dining experiences they offer.

Trying out new experiences and activities is one of my favourite aspects of a trip, which is why I’m particularly excited about the prospect of trying out some of the watersport activities available at Datai Langkawi. From kayaking, windsurfing and sailing, there’s a whole host of activities to choose from. As a nature lover, I’m drawn to the way in which the boutique resort overtly invests in their natural environment, which is evident by the fact the resort bears its own onsite team, resident naturalists and marine biologists. The nature walks and activities include jungle trails to natural waterfalls and pools, as well as a butterfly garden walk. One of my favourite parts of travelling to South East Asia is the food, which is why I’m particularly excited by the prospect of getting familiar with the dapur (Malay for kitchen), and taking part in one of Datai Langkawi’s cooking classes with a complimentary glass of wine in hand. Classes seem small (8 people) which is great, as the smaller the class the more time you get with the teacher. What’s more, you also get a complimentary glass of wine – you can’t argue with that!

Turks and Caicos Luxury Holidays: Heavenly Caribbean Islands

In our humble opinion here at Infinity & Beyond Travel, frankly what’s not to love about a luxury holiday to Turks and Caicos? This low-slung thread of idyllic islands strung out in the Caribbean Sea, just south of the Bahamas, has it all: from impossibly perfect, bone-white beaches to warm azure seas teeming with dive spots and marine life alike. Plus, with 40 individual islands and islets making up this mini archipelago – although only 8 of which are inhabited – there’s no shortage of secluded, secret spots here too. So, as winter well and truly sets in and Christmas approaches, we thought it the perfect time to remind ourselves just why the tropical haven of Turks and Caicos is so timeless, and so good. Though of course, no five-star island escape is complete without a world-class resort to return to each day, such as the phenomenal Amanyara and COMO Parrot Cay, both of which deserve a special mention and earn every ounce of the enviable reputation as two of the finest retreats in the region.

Travel to Turks and Caicos, a paradise island experience

Of the many reasons to book a luxury trip to Turks and Caicos, there’s something in particular that instantly springs to mind: beaches, beaches and more pristine sandy beaches! And they really are pristine, award-winning too, with many considering Grace Bay on Providenciales Island the best beach in the world! It’s really not hard to see why, though it’s not only Grace Bay, as the whole archipelago is a treasure trove of irresistibly iconic swathes of soft, chalky sand slowly merging with lapping cobalt waters beyond, all peppered with the odd thicket of coastal foliage covering shallow dunes, palm trees, and one or two rocky outcrops; perfect for spotting marine life.

Which actually brings us onto another highlight of Turks and Caicos, the unforgettable scuba diving and snorkelling to be done in the immaculate waters which connect these heavenly shores. Corals, tropical fish and turtles are all regular residents here, so even beginners can’t help but be in awe of what’s on offer beneath the waves, best enjoyed while luxuriating on an afternoon boat trip with a BBQ meal, naturally. However, for the odd moment that isn’t spent on the beach, elsewhere around Turks and Caicos you have some truly exceptional five-star boutique resorts, both local-style restaurants and fine dining eating options, water sports, music and culture to uncover across the main islands of Grand Turk, Providenciales, North and Middle Caicos, Salt Cay and South Caicos. Then, with little over 30,000 residents and not a main road in sight, finding your own slice of paradise to disappear to here in Turks and Caicos is also part of the appeal.

Hand-picked, exclusive Turks and Caicos resorts

When booking a trip with Infinity & Beyond Travel, you can be sure that each and every one of the hotels, resorts, lodges and retreats that we recommend has been hand-picked, carefully considered and chosen only with our travelling guests in mind. Well, our preferred luxury Turks and Caicos hotels are certainly no different. Some may say that in such a stunningly beautiful place, the resort you stay in will always come second to the natural beauty surrounding you throughout each day. This may be true, but nonetheless we know the difference between a good hotel and an exceptional one, that both allows these divine islands to speak for themselves while also ensuring the ultimate in onsite indulgences, attention to detail and outright individuality too. A five-star stay in Turks and Caicos certainly deserves the best of both these worlds, and for us, two of the finest resorts that offer just this (and more on top) are Amanyara and COMO Parrot Cay.

Amanyara Turks and Caicos

A heady fusion of-east meets-west design styles, holistic spa services and treatments good enough to rival any wellness centre in the world, plus a private white sand beach nearly 1km long, all come together in harmony at the unmistakable Amanyara Turks and Caicos. Hidden away on the archipelago’s western side, Amanyara is already ahead of the game for anyone seeking seclusion, intimacy and romance in droves, added to a tangible sense of exclusivity that owes much to both the resort’s isolated location and also its cutting-edge décor scheme. This is a place of glass-like infinity pools and decorative ponds, luxe low-level daybeds, deep-soaking bathtubs in your suites and a contemporary minimalism that says nothing but – relax. Then you have the kind of gastronomic experience at Amanyara that lives long in the memory indeed, and if you don’t believe us, book a private table on your already perfect private beach, wait for the butler as the sun begins to set, and think again!

Parrot Cay by COMO

Infinitely cool and easy on the eye, winner of multiple awards and admirably keeping watch over its own private island for many years, COMO Parrot Cay is a luxury Turks and Caicos resort that essentially enters a league of its own. Blissfully, here lies a hotel that can provide that authentic paradise island escape, one that also happens to include private-pool villas, wellness therapies that take their inspiration everywhere from Japan to the Middle East and a superb, exclusive beach club too. Then there’s the endless offerings of beautiful fine dining, with cuisine so refined, so artistically crafted and considerately sourced it simply cannot be improved, until gentle live music begins in the background to well and truly complete your sense of place each evening. Verdant native greenery surrounds you at COMO Parrot Cay, as do untouched private beaches, the occasional sunset cruise, floodlit tennis courts, diving and water sports, while the resort itself is designed and adorned with such style, subtle flair and elegance that few could claim to match. A shrinking violet COMO Parrot Cay is not, and Turks and Caicos is all the better for it!

The Romanos: A Place of Authentic Luxury

Greece is famed amongst travellers for its idyllic landscapes, beautiful weather, and deep historical culture. Its Mediterranean region is home to fine wines and oils, and is the perfect place to relax.

Costa Navarino, located in Messinia in the southwest Peloponnese, is a sumptuous and sustainable destination that provides guests with the opportunity to experience Greece in style. The unspoiled landscape, range of activities, and rich culture of the region make it great for groups, families, and couples.

The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort in Costa Navarino offers visitors both luxury and class, through the provision of genuine and authentic experiences that showcase Greek and Mediterranean culture.

RENOWNED OLIVE OILS

Located in a stunning area, The Romanos provides ample opportunity to relax on white beaches, or delve into the vast history and culture of Messinia.

Guests have the chance to throw themselves back in time, and engage in authentic cultural experiences spanning over 4500 years. The area is famed for its olive oils, and visitors can experience this in a number of ways.

The proud capital of olive oil production, Messinia provides the opportunity to sample over 250 types of olive oil, originating from the magic of the annual Autumnal harvest. A highlight of the Fall season, the unique event must be experienced to be believed, with traditional olive net collection methods still being used today.

Watch harvesters use nets to gather fallen olives as they remove the olives from the branches, using sticks to coax more stubborn fruits from the trees.

Local experts are typically on hand to run guided, informative sessions surrounding the history of the olive oil, ending in a cultured taste test of the region’s best oil.

RELAX AND UNWIND

The region’s olive oil is used as more than just a foodstuff, with the Anazoe Spa at The Romanos using olive oil in their unique oleotherapy® treatments. The spa is a great location for travellers who value authenticity, with the spa staying true to traditional Greek methods of rest and relaxation, combined with modern science.

The Anazoe Spa also features a range of other treatments for guests. Expanding on the early ideas of Greek physician Hippocrates, signature treatments include healing massages, facials, and Nestor’s Baths; a water therapy treatment designed to instil calm and wellbeing, inspired by the famed Palace of Nestor.

The location is also home to a range of beautiful beaches, giving guests the opportunity to destress, relax, and unwind.

AUTHENTIC MEDITERRANEAN VINEYARDS

In addition to its olive oil production, Messinia is renowned for its vineyards and grape harvests; a true reflection of Mediterranean culture.

For wine lovers, the Navarino Vineyards are a highlight that should not be missed. As ancient as The Iliad, experts provide guided tours of the vineyards, teaching visitors about ancient wine making history.

Of course, no vineyard trip would be complete without wine tasting, and the Navarino Vineyards provide ample opportunity to do this.

Centuries of grape cultivation techniques can be explored in a luxurious wine tasting session, allowing guests to discover key facts about the unique features of each wine, such as colour, aroma, and flavour. The authentic wines and rolling landscapes make this a must-see for any wine connoisseurs.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR FOODIES

For food lovers, The Romanos and surrounding region features a plethora of options, with traditional Greek cuisines, and opportunities to get involved with and learn more about the food’s production.

The Romanos proudly supports local farming, placing a large emphasis on the practice of a true ‘farm to table’ experience. Guests can visit the organic vegetable garden, to see where their food comes from and get a genuine feel for the rural attitude of local communities.

Moreover, authentic recipes, passed between generations, are shared by local residents, giving visitors an insight into authentic village cooking and the dishes it can produce.
Fine dining can be explored in numerous ways at The Romanos, with a range of culinary experiences for guests.

The Flame restaurant is a steakhouse that makes great use of locally sourced meat, local herbs and vegetables, providing tasty food in addition to wonderful views of the rolling Navarino Dunes.

Barbouni beach restaurant, with its innovative venue design and picturesque sunset views, is a must-see for guests. With an inspired menu, the venue’s critically acclaimed Chefs serve up freshly caught fish and other signature delicacies on the beach.

SLEEP IN STYLE

The Romanos features a number of accommodation options, providing comfort amidst luxury for any guest.

Rooms range from Deluxe Rooms to Infinity Suites with private pool, with options for sea front, golf course, and landscape views. The Master Infinity Villas and the Ambassador Villas feature stunning views, and are located on the edge of the Dunes Beach, offering true luxury to resort residents. The two Royal Villas, with a 72m2 private pool, private gym, spa area, and direct access to the beach with exclusive gazebos provide for a true VIP experience.

All in all, The Romanos is a resort that should be top of any traveller’s bucket list.

The luxury setting provides numerous opportunities to sample genuine and authentic Greek traditions, Mediterranean culture, and Greek cuisines and food practices.

Proud of its heritage, Messinia is full of wonderful experiences in olive oil tasting and wine tasting, and its rich history is a welcoming addition to an already picturesque location.

The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort, and Costa Navarino, is the authentic Greek Mediterranean travel experience that is perfect for any global explorer.

INTRODUCING THE NEW AND IMPROVED JUMEIRAH BEACH HOTEL

As a firm favourite among Dubai’s leading luxury resorts since its grand opening in 1997, the instantly recognisable Jumeirah Beach Hotel has been welcoming lucky guests into its glamorous grounds ever since. Now, as of November 2018 – following a bold move to close the entire building all summer for a glitzy top-to-bottom makeover – the much-anticipated Jumeirah Beach Hotel refurbishment is complete. Here at Infinity & Beyond Travel we have always seen this particular property (and in fact the whole Jumeirah group) as luxury pioneers of super cool, perfectly placed hotels, so thought it only right to get under the skin of their newly revamped flagship resort, in our latest blog post.

TAKING ONE OF THE BEST HOTELS IN DUBAI, AND MAKING IT BETTER

First things first, it is worth saying that prior to May 2018, when the works began, Jumeirah Beach was more than holding its own among Dubai’s most iconic luxury hotels. This is a resort that boasted over 20 fine dining and casual restaurants, poolside and lounge bars, cutting-edge décor throughout and fantastic five-star facilities for each of its 20 happy years to date, before a new vision was born in May 2018. While enviable sea views from every room or suite with luxury led large mirror, a private beach and prime location overlooking Burj Al Arab still remain at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, there’s now even more to get excited about in and around that unmistakeable, glass-clad façade.

WHAT’S NEW AT JUMEIRAH BEACH HOTEL

If you have stayed at Jumeirah Beach Hotel before and would love to go back, don’t panic, as the resort has gone out of its way to maintain the same service standards, atmosphere and experience that you know and love, just a new and improved version of it all! And for anyone yet to visit, you’re in for a treat when you do.

Beginning with the hotel’s interior design: guestrooms, suites and even Jumeirah’s entrance lobby have all been lovingly reinvented, taking a bow to their coastal setting with flecks of gold, silver, cobalt blue and white throughout, all nodding towards the surrounding sand, sea and sky respectively. This can be seen everywhere, whether in the artistic installations dangling from a high atrium ceiling or more ‘under the radar’ touches, such as columns covered in reflective glass beads and an all-new colour scheme for guestrooms. Here, in each of the 599 rooms, suites and clutch of Royal Villas, soft yellows, light blue and cream hues on the walls, bedspreads and bathroom tiles unashamedly mimic the beach scene outside, to enchanting effect.

Thankfully, the smell of fresh paint and workman’s boots has long since gone, leaving nothing but a real sparkle, clean architecture and no shortage of comfort to every polished room at Jumeirah Beach. And such contemporary décor sits in real harmony with those floor-to-ceiling windows too. The building is wrapped in them, it’s an original feature though worth noting nonetheless, for the endless ocean views alone!

Elsewhere, on top of the redesigned outdoor areas and tropical pools, an expanded swim-up bar, plush sofas on a swanky new al fresco terrace overlooking the harbour and new spa services aplenty, it is the remodelled restaurants that deserve a special mention.

WORLD CLASS RESTAURANTS AT JUMEIRAH BEACH HOTEL

Some names have changed, sure, so The Old Palm Court is now The Pearl Lounge, and Latitude becomes the intriguingly-titled Kitchen Connection, but even more importantly is what the clever bods at Jumeirah Beach Hotel have done with both the décor and, of course, the menus, that you will truly relish during any stay. There’s everything from a cosy candlelit haunt – lined with red velvet tables and chairs, thick drapes hanging from the walls and ornate chandeliers, to cutting-edge eateries serving up South American fusion food. You’ll find innovative takes on it all, and everything in between. Whether breezy beachfront cocktails as the sun begins to set or even a German-themed eatery complete with old wine barrels, traditional beer and authentically smoked Bavarian sausages, you could be in Berlin one minute and Lima the next, without needing to leave your front door; bon appetit.

REASONS TO CHOOSE JUMEIRAH

The Jumeirah Beach Hotel refurbishment has proven once again that this property, part of a wider and much-admired group of luxury resorts all over the world, are among the very best in what they do. They serve up renowned hospitality in five-star surroundings where, more often than not, the highlights of Dubai (or anywhere else for that matter) are usually on your doorstep.

Never being ones to sit back and lean on their hard-earned reputation either, the kind of attention to detail that has been paid to this luxury Dubai beach resort is extraordinary indeed, which can only be a good thing for anyone lucky enough to stay there. You still get the original hotel with its prime views of Burj Al Arab, a private beach, multiple swimming pools, family-friendly facilities and a fantastic kids club, tennis courts, waterpark access, a stunning spa, gym, and so much more. But for anyone booking a room at Jumeirah Beach Hotel from today onwards, your stay just got a lot more special.

CHECKING IN: HUVAFEN FUSHI

Cerulean waters – check. White sand beaches – check. Huvafen Fushi’s a tranquil island in the Indian Ocean with all of the essential Maldivian ingredients, plus a few more – IAB Travel discovers paradise.

ESCAPE TO HUVAFEN FUSHI

In a region where luxury hotels are 10 a penny, it can be hard to distinguish between the best. But there’s a top level of luxury Maldives hotels that go above and beyond to offer everything under the sun to the lucky guests that stay there. Huvafen Fushi is one of these hotels. A tiny speck of land cast adrift in the Indian Ocean, the white sand beaches and swaying palms are surrounded by satellite islands jutting out from boardwalks: thatched water villas, a deep turquoise swimming pool, dining pavilions. A warm, gently lapping lagoon surrounds the island, where tropical fish dart through the water and colourful corals reflect the sun. Even its name evokes thoughts of paradise: Huvafen Fushi means ‘dream island’ in the local Maldivian tongue, and after a stay here you’ll believe it’s true. Water sparkles clear as gin, restaurants serve up freshly landed seafood, sand is soft as icing sugar. This is paradise indeed.

VILLAS AND RESIDENCES WITH WOW FACTOR

Every single villa at Huvafen Fushi has its own plunge pool, so you can rise from bed each morning and take a refreshing dip before anyone else is awake. The novelty of staying over the water never gets old, watching the light glint off the ocean and the fish swimming beneath it, visible through a glass-floored living space – these villas are not only tranquil, but also intensely private, and have almost immediate access to the house reef. Alternatively, if it’s the actual beach you love about beach holidays, opt for a villa on the sands where you’re just steps away from a place to laze on the dazzlingly white shore. Inside the villas, interiors are reassuringly luxe. Think bath products from legendary Venetian atelier Bottega Veneta; sleek hardwood floors and matching ceilings; enormous beds dressed in plush linens; walls of glass. For the ultimate luxury, book a Beach Pavilion, or add a charter boat to your cruise and you can sleep on board a sleek motor cruiser with an on board wine cellar and a fireman’s pole that descends from the top deck.

UNDERWATER WORLD

Surrounded as you are by the clearest blue waters, it would be a shame not to take a dip. Cantilevered over the ocean, the waters of the lagoon-sized infinity pool bleed into the ocean and the blue horizon (at night, fibre optic lights give it an ethereal glow). While we’re certain you’ll be making the most of the swimming, snorkelling and watersports, there are more treasures under the sea to explore. The hotel’s LIME Spa is sure to impress the most jaded of jet setters – it’s a world first, where glass-walled relaxation pods feel all the more stress relieving thanks to a parade of vibrant marine life dancing past the windows. It’s no gimmick and the spa is actually very impressive: treatments are world-class and have won awards, plus visiting beauty consultants like celebrity facialists Anastasia Achilleos and Teresa Tarmey can get booked up months in advance.

DINING TO DIE FOR

Most visitors to Huvafen Fushi list Celsius as one of their favourite dining experiences of all time: sit outside and you might spot sharks swimming in the waters below, as you dine on fishy friends like oysters and piquant prawn curries calmed by the creamy taste of coconut – but this is only the beginning. Forno offers flavours of Italy in the Indian Ocean: sit beneath wafting coconut palms as you dine on perfectly incongruous Neapolitan dishes like crispy hand-thrown pizzas, delicate pasta and tiramisu. Vinum is set eight metres below the surface – a wine cellar like no other with degustation menus to complement the wine flight, rather than the other way around. For an East-meets-West twist, head to Feeling Koi (pun intended) for Japanese dishes with a South American influence. Special occasions are the usual reason for a stay here – an indulgent honeymoon, a romantic proposal, an anniversary with a zero on the end. For the most luxurious dining options speak to the concierge about the hotel’s destination dining – Huvafen Fushi is known for pulling out all the stops, and they’ll happily set up dinner à deux almost anywhere. Perhaps the seclusion of your own private deck, or perched on a rock close to the edge of the reef.

EVERYTHING ON ONE ISLAND

For an island fewer than 100 metres long, the people behind Huvafen Fushi have managed to include a great deal in such a small space – you’d need to stay here for months before you’d tire of the variety of things to do. Let’s start with the water: there’s a resident marine biologist who can guide you on snorkelling trips around the coral garden and actually explain the science behind what you’re seeing. If you’d prefer to go deeper, the PADI diving centre can take you into the depths of the Indian Ocean, where you’ll spot an incredible array of creatures. Head out on a sunset cruise to spot frolicking fish and return to a wine tasting at Vinum, and ease your sulphite-induced headache the following day with a spot of restorative yoga. Alternatively, cobwebs can be blown away with windsurfing, wakeboarding or sailing. If the outdoors isn’t ‘your thing’, relax in UMbar, a cigar lounge where Cuban and Dominican imports can be found, or opt for something altogether healthier with a curry cooking class with one of the chefs. You’ll want to recreate these dishes when you get home.

WE LIKE:

Think the BodyHoliday St Lucia is all about aerobics? Think again!

It’s called The BodyHoliday, and it’s a luxurious resort famous for whittling waists, improving serves, teaching new skills and helping guests stay active on holiday. Sound like a health farm? Think again. This luxury wellness resort is dedicated to improving the wellbeing of everyone that stays here, whether that’s with top-notch cuisine or pampering treatments for mind, body and soul. Read on to find out more about the incredible range of things to do at The BodyHoliday, without a Lycra-clad gym instructor in sight.

LEARN NEW SKILLS

If you’ve always wanted to try something new, a holiday is the perfect time. Whether that’s learning to scuba dive or sailing, the warm, blue waters of the Caribbean are the perfect place to give watersports a go. There are plenty of land activities to try too, from the more obscure (fencing, archery, tennis) to golf. The beautiful northern coastline is criss-crossed by a network of trails, and with experienced guides to show you the way it’s a great time to get back into cycling on the resort’s selection of excellent mountain bikes.

MEET LIKE MINDED PEOPLE

You may come to The BodyHoliday with your better half, friends or even alone if you’re keen for some restful solitude, but no one leaves the resort without making a few friends. Whether that’s the cheery, helpful coaches and staff or fellow guests in your classes, when you’re in paradise the good mood is infectious. One of the best ways to meet new people is to check the resort schedule and book group classes and activities which encourage teamwork and conversation: a morning walk to Pigeon Island or an introduction to sailing is likely to involve more time to chat than say, a furious session of spinning or a beginner’s snorkelling class!

FEEL YOUR BEST

The saying at The BodyHoliday goes: “give us your body for a week and we’ll give you back your mind.” Whether you want to slim down, tone up, recharge frazzled batteries or just spend some time with a loved one, feeling your best comes from many sources. Perhaps you’ll kick-start a fitness regime (in paradise, no less), or work on improving your diet with the resort’s nutritionist, or simply get your skin in tip-top condition at the spa. Mental health is also hugely important here, so mindfulness and meditation classes sit alongside traditional wellness like yoga and pilates.

DINE LIKE A CELEBRITY

Why work so hard improving the outside while filling up on junk food? While many holidays include some room for indulgence, The BodyHoliday puts emphasis on health as well as pleasure in each of its five restaurants. With a team of world-class chefs, mixologists and sommeliers on hand, you’ll dine like a supermodel – though with bigger portion sizes! – on five-star cuisine. There are no rules on what you can and cannot eat, and the team are well-versed on specialist diets such as coeliac or diabetic. Much of the food is sourced from the resort’s organic garden, and those who are serious about rebooting their diets can work with a specialist nutritionist during their stay.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF

For those who laugh at gentle yoga or have conquered their fitness goals, The BodyHoliday’s Adventure Programme is a sure win. You’ll find yourself trekking through rivers, hiking in the rainforest or up mountains, viewing hidden parts of the island (with a guide on hand, of course). For serious adventurers there are island quadrathlons (cycling, running, abseiling and kayaking) to encourage your competitive streak, or rock climbing and extreme mountain biking.

GET AN INSIGHT INTO YOUR HEALTH

With a team of experts on hand, why not take advantage of the science on offer and find out more about your long-term health? The BodyHoliday’s range of sports science consultations are the ideal way to get a snapshot of what your body needs, or what lifestyle changes you might need to make. You could learn how to heal your gut or balance digestive issues with the nutritionist, assess your performance with a former athlete, or become more aware of your lifestyle with a range of assessments and consultations.

ACHIEVE A GOAL

Many of us strive to drop a few pounds so that we look and feel our best, but if weight loss is your ultimate goal then starting your journey at The BodyHoliday is an excellent idea. Surrounded by experts and with support from knowledgeable staff, a retreat is designed to get you looking and feeling your best so you can return home with all the tools you need to continue a healthier lifestyle. There are a number of retreats to choose from: detox, weight loss, Ayurveda, mindfulness and yoga.

EXPLORE A BEAUTIFUL ISLAND

While you work on being your best self, enjoy spending time on St Lucia and discovering some of the incredible facets of this diverse island. You’ll be working out with views of paradisiacal white sand beaches, swimming in crystal clear waters and dining on delicious cuisine while enjoy sea views, and heading outside the resort is positively encouraged. Take part in guided walks and climbs to see the island’s natural beauty, or get to know its people on a cultural excursion.

CHECKING IN: FREGATE ISLAND PRIVATE

A private island paradise in the Seychelles, with beautiful beaches and a conservation programme committed to managing endangered species: Fregate Island Private is a rare treat. IAB Travel looks at what makes this secluded spot a favourite among the jet-set.

ESCAPE TO FREGATE ISLAND PRIVATE

It’s luxurious, yes – but with a wild side. Its beaches are spectacular, but with more than a hint of the Galapagos, rather than pristine Maldives-type sands. It’s inhabited by giant tortoises, rare and endangered birds, and has a conservation manager who’ll tell you all about the hotel’s commitment to helping its wildlife. Dinner is where you want it – a beach barbecue, in the boughs of a banyan tree, on a boat where you can catch your own. Fregate Island Private is an experience like no other, where white linen tables can be set up almost anywhere you choose and all experiences are designed to flow harmoniously with island rhythms and not take away from the natural environment. The tiny speck of land is one of 115 islands in the archipelago that makes up the Seychelles, located east of mainland Mahé. It’s your typical Seychelles island paradise, made up of the granite rock, talcum powder-white sands and lush tropical forest for which the region is famous.

JUST SOUTH OF THE EQUATOR

The Maldives may be the honeymoon-worthy destination of choice for many newlyweds, but for those seeking island romance with a side of something a little different, Fregate Island Private may just be the ticket. It’s just four degrees south of the equator, so it’s a year round safe bet for sun and balmy temperatures. Getting there is half the fun: an international flight to Mahé, followed by a 20-minute helicopter transfer to the island’s airstrip. Alternatively, it’s an hour by boat if you prefer the leisurely route. This beautiful spot also means it’s blissfully remote, so unless you’ve got a helicopter or a boat on standby, you’re here for the full experience: castaway with a side of chic. But why would you want to leave? There are two restaurants and two bars, but dining’s not limited to the designated areas and memorable meals can be setup under the stars wherever you choose. There’s a yacht club, a PADI dive centre and seven heavenly beaches. There’s no need to leave with every possible luxury at your fingertips.

PRIVATE ISLAND PARADISE

A private island in the Seychelles may sound out of reach for many, but consider the option of sharing your idyll with a select few other people. There are just 16 villas on the entire island, each built into the slopes of the island and linked to the main resort by paths – the rest of the island is a gloriously wild tangle of lush forest, with your neighbours more likely to be one of the many Aldabra giant tortoises than a large, rowdy family. The design of the island is not immaculate: nature is encouraged – rather than just allowed – to flourish, so there are no manicured gardens or sleek sunbathing terraces. All of this adds to the sense of private luxury however, and inside the villas you’ll find all the mod cons you need, plus private infinity pools and rainforest showers. While you’ll be sharing the island with a handful of other guests, you’re unlikely to spot many other people. Service is unobtrusive, too, and your butler can ensure that intrusions are kept to a minimum if you really would like to hole up for the duration.

ALL SINGING, ALL DANCING ALL-INCLUSIVE

A remote location such as this necessitates everything to be provided on site, from meals to activities. You won’t be disappointed by what’s included in your exceptionally generous all-inclusive board, which – as previously mentioned – includes the services of a dedicated butler assigned to each villa who will pander or leave well alone depending on your desires. All meals are included, whether you dine in one of the restaurants or opt for a feet-in-the-sand experience. While most all-inclusive options offer additional extras in the form of complimentary watersports, or tours, Fregate Island Private goes one better with fishing trips, massages, yoga classes, introductions to scuba diving, use of a golf buggy to ferry you around the island – plus all non-motorised watersports and guide nature walks. With a three-night minimum stay you’ll certainly be able to fit everything in.

COMMITTED TO CONSERVATION

While it’s sometimes easy to be wary of hotel’s conservation claims, Fregate Island Private actually does a sterling job at preserving its surrounding habitat. The hotel and accommodation itself takes up a very small footprint on what is a beautiful island rich in flora and fauna, including operating as carbon-neutrally as possible. Only essentials are imported, with most of the ingredients used in the restaurants and the spa are grown on site – around 85% of fruit and vegetables; you’ll spot the carefully-tended patches of pineapples, aubergines and herbs which are grown organically. The robust conservation programme is the resort’s hallmark, however; the island employs a resident conservationist to look after the hundreds of exotic bird species that make the island their home, who will let you join in with ecological fieldwork including spotting hawksbill turtle hatchings on the beach. Where once invasive species were planted across the Seychelles, indigenous species are now replacing the interlopers, including the heavily fragranced Wrights Gardenia. One of the resort’s most admirable feats is the reintroduction of endangered birds, including the magpie robin and the Seychelles blue pigeon – both species have been successful in breeding here.

WE LIKE:

• A mere 16 villas
• 2,200 Aldabra giant tortoises call the island home
• Seven spectacular beaches
• On-island conservation manager
• Sensationally secluded

WHICH SANI RESORT IS RIGHT FOR ME?

While most of us are familiar with the Greek Islands as a summer holiday destination, the mainland resorts of Greece are also home to an array of luxurious properties. One of the most renowned is Sani Resort, located on the unspoilt Kassandra peninsula – one of the three prongs of Halkidiki’s trident-shaped promontory that juts into the Aegean Sea.

Made up of five separate hotels, the most recent one added in 2017, Sani Resort is one of those places that comes by recommendation – families in the know regard it as a well-kept secret, so it should come as no surprise to discover that around 70 per cent of Sani’s bookings come from repeat business. So which Sani Hotel should you choose? Read our handy guide to find out which Sani Resort hotel is best (spoiler alert: all of them).

Why should you pick a Sani Resort hotel?

• Five different hotels, plus an array of restaurants, lots of pools and great facilities
• It’s part of a 1,000-acre ecological reserve, with wetlands and pine forests – lots to explore
• There’s a swish marina with a selection of upscale boutiques
• It’s right on the beach! The Aegean is just moments away
• The accommodation is top notch. No expense has been spared here
• It’s the perfect base for exploring Halkidiki’s beautiful, unspoilt coastline
• Great for families: English-speaking childcare, lots of clubs, child-friendly dining

I like: peace and quiet, natural design, fine dining

Sani Club is a tranquil space built into the hillside. Natural, unimposing bungalows are set amid the gardens and the lush vegetation, looking out over the resort and the sparkling waters of the Aegean beyond, backed by a dense pine forest that makes the hotel feel tucked away. Sani Club is further away from the main resort facilities and the marina than some of the other hotels, so you’ll find it very peaceful. It’s the setting for one of the resort’s best lunch restaurants, Cabana; set right on the beach, it’s a trendy spot with low-level rattan furniture and a Mediterranean menu.

I like: being close to the action, lots of space, contemporary design

A great choice if you have kids in tow, Sani Beach is close to the centre of the resort and feels buzzy and sociable, especially in high season. The six-storey building is the tallest and most traditional ‘hotel’ option, though it never feels impersonal and the levels of service are exceptionally high. The accommodation and communal spaces have been recently upgraded and the style is modern and very luxurious – think light and airy rooms, elegant furniture, lush fabrics, lots of glass. There are seven categories of family accommodation, plus three additional room and suite options; you’ll find the rooms exceptionally spacious and well kitted out for families. Plus most of the rooms offer amazing views of the azure Aegean.

I like: the finer things in life, private beaches, suite accommodation

Totally luxurious, Sani Asterias are for those who like the best of everything, but in a quiet, unpretentious manner. Think of it as a ‘boutique hotel option’ within the wider resort: you’re ensconced in an opulent bolthole of just 57 exclusive suites, but all the facilities are at your fingertips whenever you need them. The location of Sani Asterias is fabulous, next door to the marina so it’s great if you’re planning a sailing trip. There’s a private stretch of beach reserved just for guests of the suites, an Anne Semonin spa and all-suite accommodation in low-rise buildings which have recently seen a significant upgrade. The dining at Sani Asterias is really what sets the hotel apart from the rest: Water Restaurant is helmed by Michelin-starred chef Jacque Chibois, with a French focus, though if there’s something you’d particularly enjoy you can ask the chefs to create it for you.

I like: activities for all the family, kids’ clubs, slipping off for a spa treatment

Parents often tell us that the best Sani hotel for families is Porto Sani, which has a lively village feel and a sociable atmosphere. The main draw is the network of three swimming pools, set in beautiful landscaped gardens and connected by bridges and tunnels. There’s plenty of terrace space so you’ll never be without a sun lounger, and tiny tots will love the small shallow pool with its little rocky island. Accommodation is great for families, with lots of space – we particularly like the two- and three-bedroom family suites, which sleep up to seven people, with the three-bed suites also offering a complimentary babysitting service. Porto Sani’s spa is wonderful, and there are English-speaking nannies to look after your little ones if you want a blissful hour to yourself.

I like: staying close to a beach, exploring the local area, authentic experiences

Sani Dunes is the newest of Sani’s beautiful properties, a swish, luxurious hotel that has become the grown-up oasis of the resort. It’s ideal if you’re looking to relax but also want the knowledge that there’s plenty to do nearby; all the facilities at the resort are at your fingertips. Sani Dunes is blissfully laid-back, with an exclusive spa, on site restaurants and direct access to either the swimming pools or the beach from every one of the bedrooms. If you’re looking to get out and explore this is the hotel for you. Hire a car or use the hotel’s chauffeur-driven tour service (you’ll be taken via an air-conditioned Volvo – which accepts children – to Cape Posidi and Mount Olympus), or ask the concierge for maps of the area and walk around the pine forests, olive groves and along the shoreline.

JUMEIRAH FOR YOU

Those who prefer the high-end side of travel may have already heard of Jumeirah Hotels and Resorts – a group of luxury residences started in Dubai in 1997 which has grown to encompass a selection of truly opulent hotels all around the world. When travelling to Dubai it pays to pick a Jumeirah resort to harness the exceptional insider knowledge of its staff, and to benefit from some of the city’s best locations. But with a number of resorts to choose from, which one is best for you? Infinity and Beyond’s expert travel specialists are here to help you pick the perfect Jumeirah hotel for your luxury holiday to Dubai.

ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME LUXURY

Every once in a while it’s good to splash out, and Dubai is certainly the place to upgrade your travel experience. The city of excess is packed with ultra-luxury hotels, but the most enduring landmark of Dubai’s hotel scene is without doubt the Burj Al Arab. The eye-catching design is legendary and can be seen for miles around, built to resemble the shape of a billowing sail as a nod to the nation’s seafaring history. Inside, however, opulence is the order of the day, with a soaring central atrium flanked by golden columns at the centre of the hotel and more than 30 different types of marble used in the design, including rare Statuario – once used by Michelangelo. Service is exquisite, from a fleet of Rolls-Royce Phantoms at guests’ disposal, 32 butler-serviced cabanas on the hotel’s sun deck and a two-level spa with a plethora of wellness facilities. The staff-to-guest ratio is one of the highest in the world at 8:1 and 24-hour butler service comes as standard. All of this luxury comes at a cost, but when you’re dining on Michelin-starred cuisine next to a tropical aquarium, using full-size Hermès bath products in your suite or drinking cocktails overlooking the city lights from the 27th floor, you’ll deem it all to be worth the expense.

FAMILY BEACH FUN

Dubai is exceptionally family friendly, and one of the best resorts for a family holiday to Dubai is one of the originals: Jumeirah Beach Resort. Opened in 1997, the hotel remains as popular as ever, its iconic wave-shaped design complementing the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab, located next to the hotel. Over 26 storeys of almost 600 rooms and suites mean plenty of space for families; our pick for those travelling with little ones would be the ground floor garden suites, which feature a kitchenette for whipping up quick meals for hungry tummies, huge lounges for playing in and private terraces for extra space – child-safe locks on the doors give mums and dads peace of mind. Dedicated family facilities include a fantastic pool, babysitting service and Sinbad’s Kids’ Club for ages two to 12, but the crowning glory is access to one of Dubai’s top attractions: Wild Wadi Waterpark. Complimentary access to the waterpark means all ages will find something to keep them occupied, and at no extra charge it’s perfect for large families in a city that’s notoriously spendy. Fussy eaters will definitely find something to love in one of the 21 restaurants, from Italian to steak and even British pub grub. The resort goes above and beyond to ensure that Brits feel at home, even offering usually unavailable bacon and pork sausages at breakfast to complete your full English.

VARIETY ALL IN ONE PLACE

If you’re looking to fly and flop, there’s one place that makes this perfectly easy. Madinat Jumeirah Resort encompasses four luxury hotels, each one more opulent than the last, with a central area offering 50 restaurants and bars, an entertainment centre and its own private beach. The resort is ideal if you’re travelling as a group with different needs: you can pick a hotel to suit you and come together at the leisure and entertainment facilities. Al Naseem is the opposite side of Dubai’s showy opulence, with luxury facilities decorated in natural tones and materials like stone and wood; there’s also a protected seawater lagoon for rescued sea turtles to recuperate in before being released back into the wild – it’s perfect for budding eco warriors. Al Qasr is markedly different: its name means ‘the palace’ and it’s designed to resemble a sheikh’s summer residence. Fans of Dubai’s trademark flashy style will love this hotel. Dar Al Masyaf is peaceful and tranquil, perfect for romantic breaks with 24-hour butler service and summerhouse-style accommodation. Lastly, Mina A’Salam is charming and luxurious, perfect for those seeking a relaxing break: the wellness facilities are second to none, with pampering treatments inspired by traditional Arabian techniques and a health club with fitness classes. Which one would you choose?

CHECKING IN: THE ANASSA

With spring (and then summer) tantalisingly round the corner, IAB Travel looks to the not-so-distant future at Anassa in Cyprus – one of our favourite spots for a summer holiday in the sun.

ESCAPE TO ANASSA

Surrounded by the kind of scenery that evokes the myths and legends of ancient Greece – rugged cliffs, waving grasses and tumbling Mediterranean waves – Anassa’s romantic setting is sheer bliss for couples looking to escape the humdrum for a week (or more) of sun – even with the kids in tow. Families are exceptionally well catered for here, with some of the best childcare on the island, interconnecting rooms and an inventory of kid’s kit which means you can travel without nappies, bottles or pushchairs and still arrive prepared. Set on the Akamas Peninsula, the hotel is cradled by low hills and sheltered from sea breezes. Built to epitomise a traditional Cypriot village, the resort feels tranquil and well, not much like a resort at all.

GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE GODDESS OF LOVE

In ancient times the goddess of love, Aphrodite was fabled to have enjoyed lovers’ trysts with Adonis on the peninsula and it’s not hard to see why. The northwest tip of Cyprus is one of the least inhabited areas of the island, with a rugged coastline that draws walkers and mountain bikers to explore its unpaved tracks and footpaths. Today it is blissfully peaceful and undeveloped, save for a few luxury hotels like Anassa – a far cry from its more recent past as a firing range for the British Army. The peninsula is home to a huge variety of habitats and wide range of wildlife, including at least 160 varieties of bird and 16 different butterfly species. One of the peninsula’s main wildlife draws is the sea turtles, both green and loggerhead, which lay their eggs on the unspoilt beaches. At just 45 minutes’ drive from Paphos International Airport, it feels like a world away.

TRY SOMETHING NEW

With so much space and natural beauty on your doorstep, it would be a great shame not to explore in more detail. Anassa offers a plethora of activities to help you make the most of your time in Cyprus, from watersports to land-based activities with like-minded travellers. Group activities encourage making lasting friendships while enjoying something new, such as introductory courses in scuba diving and luxury cruises which sail around the peninsula on board the hotel’s own Bavaria 41 cruiser yacht. The all-day discovery tour of the local area is one not to miss: meet the local people, visit some of the island’s prettiest villages, enjoy a wine tasting and indulge in a Cypriot feast. You could also try a more adrenaline-filled excursion around the Akamas Peninsula in a four-wheel drive jeep. The hotel can also organise private excursions on request. A huge variety of sports activities are also available, from yoga and Pilates to beach volleyball and squash.

JUST FOR GROWN-UPS

Anassa may be one of the best family resorts in Cyprus, but it’s not just for families. Couples will love the excellent spa, wide choice of restaurants and beautiful setting with great activities on offer. There’s even a fashionable concept store selling designer labels including Miu Miu, Etro and Rochas. Thalassa Spa is consistently lauded with awards: the 18-room temple of indulgence uses seawater pumped directly from the bay at Chrysochou and offers everything from saltwater jet spray massages, wraps and massages to 10-day detox packages to reset the body inside and out. When you’re not being pummelled or polished, there’s a Roman-style swimming pool lit by enormous skylights, saunas and steam baths to distract you. And while there are four restaurants on offer, one is reserved just for teens and above so you can escape little ones for a little adults-only respite.

PACK LIGHT

The secret has long been out that Anassa offers some of the best family-friendly accommodation in Cyprus – that’s why many families return year after year to make the most of its variety (that word again) and excellent facilities. One of the hotel’s top initiatives is the Baby Go Lightly service, allowing parents to leave bulky items like nappies and pushchairs at home, instead ordering ahead from the hotel online, so it’s all ready and waiting for you in your room when you arrive. Some of the items available include car seats, potties, sterilisers, baby bathtubs and all manner of skin-friendly shampoos and bath products, plus storybooks and DVDs in a variety of languages. Babies require a huge amount of ‘stuff’ on holiday, so it’s just one way the hotel are helping to make new parents’ lives easier. Babysitters are also available, should you crave a night off. The hotel’s family accommodation is also famously well equipped, with interconnecting doors, big sofas for snuggling up in and dining terraces so you have the choice to eat in your room.

WE LIKE:

• Posh picnics: perfect for families
• Beautifully unspoilt setting
• Parents can pack light and still arrive prepared
• Excellent choice of restaurants
• 18-room Roman style spa
